I hope that you were mostly immune to all of that conspicuous consumption and survived it with your finances and sense of well-being intact. REI closes their doors on Black Friday with the idea that everyone might stay outdoors for another day of fun. That is a responsible commercial model—but it leaves countless other retailers and 364 other days to reinvent.
If you are shopping for a gift for someone like me, then at the top of my wish list is Cormac McCarthy’s impending “The Passenger Box Set: The Passenger, Stella Maris” to be released December 6, 2022. This is McCarthy’s first book release since “The Road” was published in September 2006.
If you shop for someone that might be attracted to Lowcountry history and stories with a sense of Place and emphasis on matters of memory, family, land and food—then consider my “Magnolia Elegy: Place In the Edisto Fork” published earlier this year and available where ever books are sold.
