Then things got complicated.
Over the weekend, I intended to read Elmore Leonard's 2009 story Comfort to the Enemy, which is set around the "Deep Fork" camp near Okmulgee, Oklahoma; which was one of the over 500 prisoner of war camps in the U.S. that housed over 400,000 German and Italian POWs during World War II. A recent Old Ones Dream post, German Prisoners of War in South Carolina, tells some of this almost forgotten story.
But then I picked up The New Yorker, June 10 & 17, 2013, Summer Fiction: Crimes & Misdemeanors, containing a dozen pieces of fiction, memoirs, and true crimes. Annie Proulx and Carmac McCarthy between the covers with Dashiell Hammett, Gary Shteyngart, Ed Park, Sherman Alexie, Jhumpa Lahiri, Walter Kirn, George Pelecanos, David Peace, Roger Angell and Joyce Carol Oates.
If you enjoy crime stories don't miss it.
Now! Back to Elmore Leonard!
